Estonia is a country by the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe. Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia after the capital city Tallinn. Tartu, which lies on the Emajõgi river, is situated in Southern Estonia. Until the end of the 19th century, Tartu was known in most of the world by its historical name Dorpat.
Tartu, the largest urban center of southern Estonia, is often considered the “intellectual capital city” or “the city of good thoughts”, especially as it is home to the oldest and most renowned university in Estonia, the University of Tartu (founded in 1632).
